The Purity Myth

If you’re a female this should concern and frighten you in a big way.

 Reblogging to watch later.

Jessica Valenti is amazing, and I need to see this whole thing.

So many of the clips shown make me feel sick.

I’m glad there’s someone pointing out that intelligence compassion etc is more important than what one does with their body.

I hope they point out the double standards between women and men as well.

obviously they should tell kids that abstinence is really the only way to prevent pregnancy (but not put such a heavy moral meaning on it), but they also need to teach safe sex

because really

MY FEMALE FOLLOWERS! WATCH THIS!

I don’t like this at all.

Especially because I live in the south, this is a HUGE thing for me. I get told all the time that I look promiscuous because I dress a certain way, that I’m never going to get a boyfriend because I express my ideas freely. But this? This is so much more than that. It’s frightening, that people think just because a woman has sex she’s not as good as someone else. That’s really frightening to me.

This here is one of the reasons I sometimes hate my own continent.

Ohhey, it’s back.

I’ve actually read this book, I recommend it.

Wow. My interest = piqued.

holy crap at the clips D:

Oh wow, some of these clips are really unnerving.

It really is a huge problem. Just, ugh, those clips are so fucking unnerving.

This really makes me sick to my stomach. I’ve literally had people tell me I was less of a person because I am not a virgin, because I don’t ever want to marry and have kids. My parents say things like that to me, too. And that’s not right. It’s my body, not theirs. If I don’t want to stay ‘pure’, I’m not going to. Instead of teaching abstinence, teaching how to be SAFE about it should be the most important thing. That’s what is keeping kids from getting pregnant, not telling them that if they stay away, they will be fine. Sure, not having sex can prevent pregnancy, but not everyone does. I’d rather the children that are around me to know that, if they are going to have sex, how to be safe about it rather than telling them not to do what they feel is right for their bodies.

Omg the guy at the end though

“Personally I love gender stereortyping”

jesus FUCKING christ
